The value of SEO maintenance

Imagine this scenario: you’ve completed your site’s optimisation, and everything is going swimmingly. Because you ignored so many other factors of your business during the search engine optimisation process, you leave your site alone for a couple of weeks to get everything else sorted out. Eventually, you remember the advice of your SEO company and start posting some fresh content. You also stick in a couple of links to some associates, because they’ve promised to link to you. After just a few months, your entire site is a mess.

A regular maintenance schedule is essential for the long-term health of your site. Most companies will already have a site maintenance routine before they approach SEO, which might involve checking code and backing up files regularly. Your optimisation maintenance schedule should be easily slotted into your regular (more…)

Structure your internal links for SEO

Inbound links can be a huge boost for your site’s SEO, but you shouldn’t forget that your internal links can be just as helpful as well. One of the major advantages of internal links is that you have complete control over them. While you have to rely on the kindness of others for your external links, or other link building tactics, your internal links have exactly the link text, position and frequency you desire.

Many businesses overlook their internal linking structure for long periods of time. This is understandable. It can be hard to keep on top of your site’s structure, particularly if you’re adding constant fresh content as well. Maintenance of your internal links should make up part of your regular search engine optimisation maintenance routine. It’s important to make sure that your link structure is (more…)

What to expect from initial SEO

If you’re new to the world of search engine optimisation, the first months of any contact with an SEO firm can be very confusing. The SEO industry is very generous with information, but one of the subjects that is very rarely covered is what, exactly, will happen when you first optimise. This can be unsettling for a business that’s first approaching optimisation.

Different SEO companies will approach optimisation differently, and you can discuss this with us at Stuck On. Most companies will cover similar areas, however, which will usually include the following:

SEO analysis: This is the very first step in any SEO campaign, and often happens before a business has even signed on with a search engine optimisation company. Search engine optimisation companies frequently offer SEO analysis for free, both as an incentive to new clients and as (more…)

Internet marketing requires a more subtle approach

If you look through various magazines and TV channels you’ll see advertising at its most base level. These forms of advertising are aimed at those who watch TV incessantly, and read magazines about celebrities, diet tips and what they should be wearing.

This is hard sell advertising, perfected over decades. Internet advertising on the other hand is very different, and the use of hard sell advertising online does not work. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is the intellect of the audience. Internet users are more savvy than the target TV watching market, and they know when someone is trying to sell them something.

Adverts that are blatantly adverts will be ignored, almost without thought, due to something known as ‘ad blindness’. Since the Internet first started, websites and marketers have used it to try and sell products. One of the most common forms of advertising is the (more…)

Always monitor your SEO tweaks

Performing search engine optimisation for Wordpress is a joy. The system has been built with such loving care and with so many features and plugins available that you can do just about anything you want to in terms of SEO, quickly and easily.

Sometimes however you can go too far, and can make SEO tweaks that actually cost you rankings. When this happens it’s important to identify the problem and rectify it quickly.

For example, the Wordpress plugin All In One SEO offers many wonderful options for customising the way Google indexes your website and blog. One of the features it offers is a ‘noindex’ for categories. This means that Google, and the other search engines that obey the noindex rule, won’t index the content on the category pages. This would be done to prevent (more…)

Why Google loves search engine optimisation

Some people believe that search engine optimisation is, at its very basic level, at odds with Google and that Google doesn’t like websites that have SEO performed on them. SEO is seen by some as ‘cheating’ the system, as though its sole purpose was to con Google into thinking that a website should be ranked for a certain keyword, when in actual fact it shouldn’t.

There was a time when this belief was correct. SEO was something of a dark art, practised by warlocks of the Internet (often in basements) and used very questionable practices indeed. However, these days those techniques no longer work (at least not in the long term) and SEO has had to go legit.

In fact, SEO has more than gone legit – it follows Google’s advice and code of practice to the letter, and without SEO Google couldn’t do the job it does so well.

Let’s give you some background.

Google makes money. Google makes a lot of money. Google in fact makes more money than (more…)

How can I increase my Google ranking?

It’s a question often asked online, but few websites actually tell you how to do it. Here’s a little tip you can use to help your website to rank a little bit higher in Google’s rankings, and to stand out from the rest.

Firstly, you need to be adding content to your website. This is a given. If you’re not adding regular content in the form of news, articles or blogs, begin now. You can’t expect to become the biggest and the best if you’re not putting the work in to your website.

Now that you are adding regular content, check your website’s statistics. Not your rankings, your statistics. This could be by using Google Analytics, AW Stats, or some other stats package. Have a look at your website’s current traffic and what keywords your visitors are searching for. You want to look for key phrases that are two or more words. This is called ‘longtail search’.

Now, this is the clever bit. Put those key phrases into (more…)
