The difference between SEOs and car salesmen

car-salesmanUsed car salesman.’ Those three words are all it takes to draw a cringe from most people. The image itself might not be particularly faithful to the real members of that profession, but everyone knows what the image stands for: the use of specialist knowledge to bamboozle the average person.

For the newcomer to SEO, there seems a certain similarity between those in SEO sales jobs and used car salesmen. Some SEO companies take advantage of a newcomer’s lack of knowledge, offering them services they don’t need or wrestling them into unfair contracts. It’s the kind of situation every site owner fears, and more than a few encounters.

There is one main difference between all SEOs and car salesmen, however, and this is the difference that can help any newcomer. The difference is (more…)

The further adventures of Procrastination Man

He’s faster than a speeding broadband connection. He’s stronger than your urge to go get another cup of coffee. He’s… Procrastination Man.

Oh, the work Procrastination Man can do in the business world, fighting the evils of procrastination. Unfortunately, since his last bout with Dr. ICanHasCheezburger, he’s in a bad way. Any website owner in peril will have to find a way to avoid procrastination by themselves when trying to continue their search engine optimisation.

A lot of site owners put off their SEO for a long time, then really get into the flow of it once they get a SEO plan happening. Unfortunately, after that busy period, a huge number of site owners let their search engine optimisation slip, letting everything stay as it is until finally they have to completely re-optimise the entire site again due to (more…)

Why is no one reading my blog?

No, this isn’t a desperate plea from the heart of someone who believes he’s being ignored by the Internet community as a whole – no need to alert social services to my predicament just yet. This is instead an observation of many blogs on the Internet, where the owners of the blogs fail to understand why no one is reading, commenting or even visiting.

I found one such blog recently in a very niche industry. The content on the blog was updated regularly, sometimes every day, and was extremely well written. The authors on the blog were all experts in their field, and they write interesting content from a very knowledgeable standpoint.

However, nobody was reading the blog or leaving any comments. How do I know this? I know this because one of the blogs was actually about how they’re not getting any readers or comments. The blog was titled ‘Read These Blogs’ and proceeded to explain that nobody was… the author didn’t know why and was questioning his (more…)

Procrastination Man saves the day!

Procrastination ManJust think about how good it would be if there was a procrastination superhero. You have something tremendously important to do, your attention wanders, and – wham! Someone in an interesting costume sets you back on the right path.

It’s all too easy to procrastinate on the web. Just ask any office worker. Instead of getting down to the no-doubt intriguing code testing that they have to get done by the end of the week, many people find themselves deeply concerned about what’s happening on FAIL Blog. There is other work to do but this is interesting and important. It really is.

Much like the average struggling office worker, site owners find all sorts of things to distract themselves from the needs of their site. Search engine optimisation looms in the (more…)

Don’t get Sherlocked out of an SEO fee

Anyone who has been watching the new BBC series ‘Sherlock’, from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, will know that everything’s all too easy for Sherlock Holmes. He comes in, glances around a room and swiftly deduces everything from the solution for the crime to the embarrassing experiences the butler had in his youth. He then swans out again; smugly confident in the effect he’s had.

At least he’s a terrible violin player.

Sherlock and Watson

Sherlock and Watson, all too easy!

Some SEO companies are the same. They swan in to a site, declare that five different elements are what are holding it back, offer to fix the problems for a set fee, take the fee, mangle the site, and (more…)

How to tell when someone knows nothing about SEO

SEO is something of an enigma; there are no formal qualifications in it, you can’t learn it in a school and you don’t need any training, or even prior knowledge of it before offering it as a service. This means, rather sadly, that there are many charlatans out there offering SEO as part of their services without even the first clue about how to do it. Even sadder is the fact that clients are often unwittingly taken in by their blarney, blissfully unaware that they’re paying money for nothing – and clicks to their website, rather than being free, will never materialise at all.

So how do you tell when someone’s spinning you a line and they, in fact, know absolutely nothing about SEO? Here are a few things that SEO charlatans will say, and a few ways you can spot their distinct lack of knowledge.

We’ll submit your site to Google

While this comment isn’t perhaps as stupid as we’re about to make it out to be, as you can still physically ‘submit’ your website to Google, there really is no need. Submitting your site to Google is sort of like the Pope telling everyone he’s Catholic – that’s kind of a done deal already. Submitting your site to Google isn’t part of any SEO strategy, and it won’t aid your rankings within Google.

We’ll make sure your Meta keywords are correct

I used to work for a design agency in Cardiff where the sales director insisted on telling clients that we would add keywords to their Meta keywords tags so they would appear in Google. No matter how many times (more…)

Pride and prejudice… and web designers

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy

It is a universally acknowledged truth that a web designer in possession of some HTML skills and a rough idea of SEO is in want of whatever SEO jobs are going. Take the experience of the web gained through years of web design, combine it with a touch of search engine optimisation, and you have as perfect a match as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy.

Unfortunately, just like Jane Austen‘s entertaining lovers, web designers tackling SEO jobs get off to a rocky start. Web design and SEO might seem like a perfect match on the outside, but it takes a little time and adjustment for things to run smoothly.

The problem, just as with the characters of Pride and Prejudice, is a slight lack of (more…)

The 3 essentials of on-page SEO

One of the main questions my fellow SEO gurus are often asked is ‘If you could only do three things to a page to improve its SEO, what would you do?‘ It’s right there behind, ‘What the heck is SEO anyway?‘ The answers will vary slightly from expert to expert, but essentially there are three main things you can do to improve the search engine optimisation of the pages of your website.

1. Good title tags. You might be surprised, but this is the most complex task, and one that is so often found wanting on the pages of many websites. Forming a good title tag is one of the tougher SEO jobs, and one of the most important.

2. Good content. One of the hardest SEO jobs to master is simplicity. Really. Many of the newcomers to SEO careers go all out for their clients, and fail. Not because of a lack of effort, but more due to too much effort. Think of good SEO content as a (more…)
